what the…

I’m wondering what’s up with everyone using all the mock cuss words lately. They usually look something like this:

  • “What the %#&@!”
  • “That piece of $#*@!”
  • “Who the #@!!”

…or something to that nature.

I mean, if we (’we’ meaning the Christ-followers who also happen to be bloggers) are going to say something online for the world to see, for goodness sakes just say what you mean. If we’re thinking those words in our everyday circumstances frequently enough that they manifest themselves by way of a ‘censored’ blog post, then type’em in there.

I don’t think God goes after the letter of the law, but the motives of the heart. So, you’re in the same boat in His eyes whether you spit it or not.

Okay, I’m done… Just a rant.

  1. Yo. If you’re going to rant, go all out. I get a headfull at the first stubbed toe, but I certaintly don’t go expressing that in front of my family, friends, and children. Just because we are thinking it doens’t mean it needs to come out. Just because it’s just as bad to lust over a woman as to actually do the act doesn’t mean you may as well do the act. (Sorry, best example I could think of). I am currently of the opinion that if the Christian community has nothing better to say than to curse and swear, they’d be better off not writing it down until God cleans up their speech. I’ve argued with the best of them on this, and ultimately, dropped some links I loved. I’m tired of condoning the language…it was implanting in my brain. I don’t watch movies with language, or allow TV shows in my home, and I don’t like having to minimize the screen when my family walks by my kitchen computer just because some Christian was having a “real and authentic” moment.

Okay, now THAT was ranting. Or was it stepping on toes? Or better yet, iron sharpening iron somewhere? I hope so. Trying to stay and real and authentic to “relate to the culture” to me, is putting a bowl over our light. It is “worldly wisdom” aspiring to sound like godly wisdom, really just excusing us to live and act and speak the way we want rather than what Christ asks for us to actually be light to the world, and to have the salt, flavor, and seasoning that will actually attract the world. That is HIS plan…not some self righteous person who thinks he or she is better than anybody else. I’ve got a lot of work to do on myself, but this is not a “trend” or “Gen X, or Y, or Z” thing I’m giving in to for the sake of some book on Christianity and what the church is becoming in 2006 for whatever wacko reasons. When did we start letting books determine who we will and won’t be in favor of actually reading the Bible as the basis for qualification for godly leadership?

Still ranting. Okay, should have written my own blog entry on this I do suppose. Ya’ll have fun with it. I’m going to go wipe off my computer screen. I think I’ve spit all over it trying to get this out, and it’s been brewing in my little potato head for a bit too long I can see right now.

Thanks for bringing up a hard and much debated topic, no joke.

  2. um…sorry for the lack of spellcheck there, but I’ve got a boy throwing up in my home today and wrote way too fast. anyway…thanks!

  3. Thanks for the encouragement. I was a little irritated about the subject, so it’s encouraging to see that I’m not the only one thinking it.

My Bible says it’s wrong to use obscene language. And ‘obscene’ is definitely debatable depending on your culture, location in the world, etc. But if you have to censor your own words, I’d say that’s a pretty clear indication there. I just want to say clean up your mouth and if you’re that short on adjectives, go read a dictionary.

Anyway, apparently there’s some ranting still to be done about this in my head. Sorry if I sound harsh, I don’t intend it to be.

    Thanks again for words.
