Encounter God.
I Sam. 17:32, David & Goliath
David told Saul repeatedly, “…your servant will go.” Later, after David had killed Goliath, Saul asked around whose son David was - the response was “we don’t know.” No one knew who he was.
David was living to make God’s name great.
If you or I were putting our lives on the line, we would likely do everything in our power to make sure that we would be remembered for what we had done. Make plans to build a memorial. Have the battlefield named after us… but David’s only goal was to make God’s name great.
Humility.
We tend to over-spiritualize things while the real motive is to focus on ourselves.
Luke 14:11 “…whoever exalts himself will be humbled.”
Cultivating Humility…
- Look at the vastness of God.
When we see how great He is - we will be humbled.“Comparing our beings to God’s being is like comparing a candle to the sun.”
- Invest in Obscurity.
We worship God through our actions, whether cleaning the floors or setting up chairs. Where are you serving that no one knows about?“God is looking for servants, not stars.”
- Choose to prefer others.
A jealous eye/heart destroys others and ourselves. Saul kept a jealous eye on David. Who are we keeping a jealous eye over?“There is no limit to how much a person can accomplish if they don’t care who gets the credit.”
Three questions to ask yourself:
- How am I handling compliments?
- How am I handling criticism?
- How am I dealing with my peers and colleagues?
Remember… Humility does not stop us from rising up!
We need to rise up, knowing that it isn’t about us - it’s about making His name known throughout the earth.
“Shame says, ‘I’m nothing to look at.’ Humility says, ‘I bear glory, but it’s a reflection of God’s glory.’ ” -John Eldrige.
