01FebIt’s Official… I’ve lost my mind.

This morning I registered for the 2008 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

This is my first ever marathon and, not surprisingly, the longest distance I’ve ever attempted. The next-closest distance I’ve trained for was the Chicago Half Marathon, which I ended up missing thanks to a sprained ankle. But I at least know I can run mileages in the double digits… but 26.2 miles? That remains to be seen.

I’ve set a few goals for myself in anticipation of the race…

Goal #1:

Finish.

In the event that I’m successful in goal #1, I’ve made Goal #2:

Finish in 3 hours, 45 minutes

Chicago Marathon

Pray that my sanity returns before registration opens for something even worse.

05OctTwo Days.

That’s it.

Two. Days.

That’s how long it took for me to get hurt riding my bike to work.

Wednesday evening I was riding in the grass next to the road, barely half a mile from the office when it happened. I looked up and saw a small bump just ahead of me. As I tightened my grip, I realized that the unkempt grass was hiding the true depth of the ‘bump’…

The next thing I remember was my head slamming into the ground and gasping for breath. All of the air had been knocked out of me and I laid on the ground trying to rip my helmet off of my head using suddenly numb fingers and arms. I laid there, sprawled out along a busy road, gathering my thoughts… it seemed like 30 seconds, but when I looked again at my watch it was actually closer to 10 minutes.

The ‘bump’ was actually a 12-inch-wide, 6-inch-deep rut from a truck, leftover from whoever was responsible for the shoddy landscaping job in the lot.

Next week I’m shooting for three accident-free days.

The best part is that we’re getting our pictures taken for Christmas tomorrow (Saturday) and I have a mark across my forehead that looks like I got kicked in the face.

Thank God for Photoshop.

14JanGod 1. Bears 0.

I was slightly unprepared today. I had the worship ready, and the service went according to plan …for the most part.

Normally we’ll sing a song at the end, and as we’re finishing, you can see some of the guys edging closer to the aisle so they can get out before anyone else. “But the Bears are playing! And it’s a 12:00 game!” Personally, I think that’s why God gave us things like Tivo and a DVR. But not everyone has heeded the call of the Lord to record.

So anyway, today there was an alter call and the band played Mighty to Save. Since there were still people down in front for prayer when the song ended, I said that everyone was welcome to stay and worship while our pastors prayed for the ones that came forward, otherwise if they left to please exit quietly.

No one moved.

I was worrying that my microphone wasn’t on. This is the playoffs right? I mean, the biggest complaint I get from guys I invite to a service is that it interferes with the Bears game.

But today God moved. And the people stayed.

And the Bears won, too. So, all in all it was a great day.
